Freshmen Take Charge in U-M Win Over Falcons
10/30/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Freshman netminder Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) made 15 saves in the first period to keep the Wolverines (5-1-0, 4-0-0 CCHA) in the game as Michigan managed just five shots on Mike Savard and Bowling Green (1-3-0, 0-2-0 CCHA) in the first.
Mike Van Ryn (London, Ontario) netted his third goal in as many games at the 3:02 mark of the second period, and freshman Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) scored his fourth goal of the season with 11:32 remaining in the same period to get the Wolverines back on track. Bowling Green's Chris Bonvie added a goal at the 15:35 mark to make it a 2-1 game after two periods.
Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) opened the third period by scoring his fourth goal of the season at 3:45. Like Van Ryn, it was his third goal in as many games. Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.) added an unassisted goal after stealing the puck in the neutral zone just over a minute later to make the score 4-1.
Bowling Green threatened after adding a goal by Mike Jones at 11:51 of the third. However, after the Falcons pulled goaltender late in the game, Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) passed up an opportunity to score an empty-net goal, instead giving the puck to Comrie for his second goal of the evening and fifth of the season to make the final 5-2.
Berenzweig and Comrie also registered assists to give them two and three points, respectively, for the evening.
Michigan stays home for a 7 p.m. contest against No. 7 Northern Michigan tomorrow (Oct. 31).

QUOTES
COACH RED BERENSON
On the first period ...
"It was a game where if you didn't watch the score, Bowling Green won the game. Josh Blackburn kept us in the game."
On Northern Michigan ...
"They are the best team in the league until someone else proves it.
FRESHMAN CENTER MIKE COMRIE
On the sluggish first period ...
"We have to want it all game. Hopefully, we can do that tomorrow night."
FRESHMAN DEFENSEMAN JEFF JILLSON
On his steady improvement ...
"As a freshman, it took the first couple of weeks to learn the defensive side of the game. Now, each game I am getting more comfortable."
FRESHMAN GOALTENDER JOSH BLACKBURN
On the number of shots he faced ...
"I got twice as many shots as I normally see. It kept me a little more busy tonight. It's easier for a goalie to stay focused in a game like tonight."
