Comrie Leads Michigan Hockey Over Guelph
10/3/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
The Michigan offensive attack was keyed by freshman Mike Comrie's (Edmonton, Alb.) two-point night. Comrie picked up his first point with an assist on Michigan's second goal. He skated down the right side, drew Guelph goaltender Mark Gowan over to his side and slid a pass across to Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) all alone at the opposite post. Koch, who scored five goals last season, banged the puck into the net to give Michigan a 2-0 lead with 10:46 left in the first period.
Comrie added a goal with 1:00 left in the first period for his second point of the night and a 3-0 Michigan lead. Comrie got the puck in the right faceoff circle, cut in on net, fired a shot that Gowan saved and then knocked the rebound past the Guelph goalie.
Michigan's first goal came on a power-play opportunity 2:23 into the game. Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Mich.) passed the puck to Greg Crozier (Williamsville, N.Y.) at the top of the left faceoff circle. Crozier took the pass and blasted a low, hard slapshot by Gowan.
Guelph's lone goal came 5:08 into the third period. With the Wolverines down a man, Guelph passed the puck around the perimeter until Derek Boyer ripped a low shot from the middle of the ice at the blueline through a screen to end Michigan goalie Josh Blackburn's (Choctaw, Okla.) shutout attempt. Blackburn ended the game with 21 saves on 22 shots.
Michigan opens its regular season on Sunday (Oct. 11) at home against Lake Superior State at 7 p.m. A banner-raising ceremony commorating the 1998 NCAA national championship will be held prior to the game.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
On Josh Blackburn ...
"I thought he played well. He didn't know the shooters and there was a bigger crowd (than last night)."
On Mike Comrie ...
"I think Mike is going to be a special player. He had two great hits. He's the smallest player on our team and he leveled two guys in the first period."
CENTER MIKE COMRIE
"I get more comfortable every time I step on the ice. (As a team) we come together more and more every day."
On his big hits ...
"You got to dish it out as much as you get hit."
ASSISTANT CAPTAIN BOBBY HAYES
"We played a good first period, but the rest of the game was not up to our standards."
On the crowd ...
"I just want to thank everyone for coming out, especially the students. If fans want to see some good hockey, we're going to give it to them."
