Michigan Hockey Turns in Banner Performance
10/11/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Newcomers helped lead the Wolverines to victory as Blackburn became the first freshman goaltender to start (and win) the first game of his career since Steve Shields defeated Miami (Ohio) in the 1990 season opener. Freshman Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) added his first career goal at the 6:43 mark of the second period, taking a feed from Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) and burying his own rebound into the net.
Michigan started the scoring just 3:26 into the game. The Wolverines used a four-on-three power play to move the puck around the Lakers' zone, allowing Greg Crozier (Williamsville, N.Y.) to take a pass at the left side of the Laker net, draw the goalie over and slide a pass across the goal mouth to a wide-open Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.). Rominski flipped the puck over the goalie's pads as the power play expired for his first goal of the season and 25th of his career.
Former Wolverine Marty Turco, the NCAA's all-time winningest goalie, returned to Yost to help raise the 1998 NCAA championship banner in a pregame ceremony.
Michigan's next game is Friday (Oct. 16) at 7 p.m., when the Wolverines host Niagara at Yost.
