ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman goalie Josh Blackburn stopped 22 shots to lead the White team past the Blue team 5-0 in the University of Michigan's annual Blue-White scrimmage Friday evening (Oct. 2). A Yost Ice Arena crowd of 2,531 was on hand for the sneak preview of coach Red Berenson's club, the defending NCAA Division I champions.

The White team was led by Scott Matzka, who scored the first goal of the game at the 10:00 mark of the first period with an assist from Greg Crozier. At 15:58 of the second period, Crozier added his second point of the night, scoring a goal on an assist from Bubba Berenzweig. In the third period, Matzka added his second goal at 3:55, with an assist from Sean Ritchlin. Justin Clark and Krikor Arman rounded out the White team's scoring with third-period goals.

Blackburn and fellow freshman Kevin O'Malley made their goaltending debuts in front of the Ann Arbor crowd. Blackburn played the full 60 minutes, stopping 22 shots for the shutout. O'Malley allowed two goals in the first and second periods on 15 shots, while Greg Daddario stopped eight of 11 third-period shots in relief of O'Malley.

The Wolverines return to action Saturday night (Oct. 3) with an exhibition match against the University of Guelph at 7 p.m. in Yost Ice Arena.
