Nicole (Edwards) Sifuentes has joined the Michigan Women's Cross Country and Track and Field coaching staff, working closely under cross country head coach and track and field associate head coach Mike McGuire. A two-time Olympian for Canada, Sifuentes has been with McGuire since her own time as a Wolverine (2006-09), and the two have continued working together now that Sifuentes is running professionally for Saucony. Recently, they reached their second Olympic games together, as Sifuentes advanced to the 1,500-meter semifinal round in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Sifuentes was a member of the 2005 national champion distance medley relay and became a 10-time All-American at Michigan. She earned four straight All-America honors as a member of the DMR (2005-08), three consecutive in the indoor mile run (2006, '07, '08) and three straight in the outdoor 1,500-meter run (2006, '07, '08). Her third- and second-place performances in the mile at the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships, respectively, led Michigan to ninth- and third-place finishes. Her efforts at the outdoor national meet helped the Wolverines finish third and seventh, respectively, in 2007 and 2008. The pair of third-place finishes are the program's highest to date.
Edwards is a seven-time Big Ten champion, winning three titles in the indoor mile (2006, '07, '08), two as a member of the distance medley relay (2005, '07) and two in the outdoor 1,500-meter run (2006, '08). She was also a member of three Big Ten championship teams -- 2005 and 2006 indoor, and 2007 outdoor. The 2008 team captain holds the Michigan indoor record for the mile run (4:33.23) and is a member of three record-holding outdoor relays -- the 4x800-meter relay (8:18.78), 4x1,500 meter relay (17:15.62) and distance medley relay (10:49.59). In cross country, Edwards is a two-time All-American (2006, '08), as well as two-time NCAA regional champion and Athlete of the Year (2006, '07).
She helped lead Michigan to back-to-back Big Ten team titles in 2005 and 2006. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native is now competing professionally for Saucony, also gaining international experience competing for her native Canada. In 2010, she won the silver medal in the 1,500-meter run at the IAAF Continental Cup and was selected to compete for Canada at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She made her first Olympic bid during the 2012 Games and earned the opportunity to compete on the world's biggest stage again in 2016, reaching the 1,500-meter semifinal round. She competed at the World Indoor Championships in 2010, 2014 and 2016, and competed at the Outdoor Championships in 2013 and 2015.
