Mike Martin joined the University of Michigan men's basketball staff as an assistant coach in July 2026, bringing more than two decades of Division I coaching experience to Ann Arbor.
Martin arrived at Michigan following 14 years as the head coach at his alma mater, Brown University, where he became the winningest coach in the program's 120-year history with 171 career victories. Over his tenure, he transformed the Bears into one of the Ivy League's premier programs while earning a reputation as one of the conference's top recruiters and player developers.
Named Brown's head coach in 2012 at the age of 29, Martin was the fourth-youngest head coach in Division I men's basketball. He led Brown to the first 20-win season in program history (20-12) during the 2018-19 campaign, earning Ivy League Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Bears to their first postseason victory in the College Basketball Invitational.
Martin reached another career milestone on Feb. 11, 2023, when Brown defeated Cornell to give him his 134th career victory, surpassing Stanley Ward as the winningest coach in school history. He concluded his tenure with 171 victories, the most ever by a Brown head coach.
Brown reached postseason play under Martin in the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Tournament and the 2019 College Basketball Invitational while advancing to the 2024 Ivy League Tournament championship game.
Martin's teams consistently produced many of the Ivy League's top players. Brown featured four consecutive seasons with a First Team All-Ivy League selection from 2022-25, highlighted by three-time First Team All-Ivy guard Kino Lilly Jr. During his tenure, Martin coached five Ivy League Defensive Players of the Year, an Ivy League Rookie of the Year, multiple Academic All-Americans and numerous All-Ivy League selections.
Among the standouts Martin coached were Sean McGonagill, a two-time First Team All-Ivy selection and one of Brown's all-time leading scorers; Cedric Kuakumensah, the Ivy League's all-time leader in blocked shots and the conference's only player with at least 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 300 blocks; Zack Rosen, the 2012 Ivy League Player of the Year and Penn's all-time assists leader; and Landon Lewis, a First Team All-Ivy selection and CSC Academic All-American.
Prior to returning to Brown, Martin spent six seasons (2006-12) as an assistant coach at Penn. During his tenure, the Quakers won the 2007 Ivy League championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before earning a berth in the 2012 College Basketball Invitational.
Martin began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Brown during the 2005-06 season before joining Penn's staff the following year.
A four-year starting guard and co-captain at Brown from 2000-04, Martin helped the Bears compile a 63-45 overall record and a school-record 39-17 Ivy League record. Brown posted four consecutive winning seasons during his career, earned an NIT berth in 2003 and defeated Princeton in Princeton for the first time in program history.
Martin averaged 11.0 points per game as a senior and finished his career ranked third in Brown history in three-point field goals (143), ninth in steals (113) and 10th in assists (232). Following graduation, he played professionally for Dart Killester in Ireland during the 2004-05 season before returning to Brown as an assistant coach.
Martin has been recognized throughout his career for both his coaching and service to the game. He was named the 2019 Ivy League Coach of the Year, was a finalist for the 2013 Joe B. Hall Award, serves on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Regional Advisory Committee and has been inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in the Perry Category for distinguished achievement as both a player and coach.
Martin is married to Kristin (Ferrell), a former member of the Brown women's soccer team. Together, they have three daughters.
