Matt Hoffman
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Matt Hoffman is in his sixth season with the University of Michigan men’s golf program. He utilizes his extensive background in Kinesiology and exercise science to provide student-athletes with technically written performance plans using principles in biomechanics.
A former Illinois teammate of U-M coach Zach Barlow, Hoffman brings a wealth of golf knowledge to the Wolverine program. Before working with Barlow, Hoffman played professionally on PGA Tour Canada and U.S. mini-tours for six years. A Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified Instructor, he completed the instructor's program at the High-Performance Golf Academy after moving on from his competitive career.
*****
Navigating COVID-19 throughout their first two seasons, Hoffman helped Barlow begin to rebuild the Wolverine program despite the cancelation of the 2020 spring season and 2021 fall seasons.
During the past three seasons, under their guidance the Maize and Blue have 18 top-five finishes in 35 events, capturing four team titles -- 2022 Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 5-6), 2023 Big Ten Match Play Championship (Feb. 3-4), 2023 Island Resort Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-4) and 2023 Virtues Intercollegiate (Sept. 25-26).
Among those team titles, U-M made a run at the 2023 Big Ten Match Play as the No. 8 seed. After a 3-2 win over No. 7 Iowa, the Wolverine knocked off the top three seeds No. 2 Michigan State (3.5-1.5), No. 3 Indiana (3-2), and No. 1 Northwestern (3-2). Hunter Thomson used his unblemished (4-0) mark to help U-M capture a second match play title. He was the third Wolverine to post a perfect 4-0 record and the second under Hoffman as Patrick Sullivan was perfect in 2020 (4-0).
Overall, the Wolverines have garnered five medalist honors as Charlie Pilon won the 2019 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-22), Will Anderson won the 2021 Macdonald Cup (Sept. 25-26), Ben Hoagland and Yuqi Liu were part of tri-medalists at the 2023 Virtues Intercollegiate (Sept. 25-26), Jude Kim, claimed the Indy at Forest Hills (Sept. 29) and Thomson captured the 2024 Palmas del Mar Collegiate (Feb. 11-13) crown.
Brent Ito was named to the All-Big Ten second team and PING All-Midwest honors in 2020, while Thomson followed two years later earning All-Big Ten first-team honors and All-Midwest accolades in 2024. The Maize and Blue have 32 Academic All-Big Ten certificates and seven Big Ten Distinguished Scholar awards, including three by Pier Francesco De Col (2021, '22, '23).
Using a program record 70.56 scoring average, Thomson helped the Maize and Blue return to the NCAA postseason as an invited individual in 2024. Playing at the Purdue regional, he tied for 27th, missing an advancing slot to the NCAA Finals.

Before heading to Ann Arbor, Hoffman spent two years as an assistant coach with one of Canada's most prestigious golf programs at Humber College (2017-19) in Toronto. The Hawks won back-to-back Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championships. They were the runner-up at the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships after finishing third in 2018.
While coaching at Humber College, Hoffman was also an instructor at the TOUR Performance Golf Academy in Milton, Ontario. He has coached many high-performance golfers striving for the PGA and LPGA Tours and also served as the head coach of the junior golf development camps at Pipers Heath, where the Academy is located. He is fluent in Trackman Technology and has been mentored by some of the most successful coaches in the world over the past 15 years.
*****
Before moving full-time into coaching, Hoffman played three years (2011-13) on PGA Tour Canada, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. In 2014, he spent three more years participating in several mini-tour events throughout the United States, including the Hooters Tour (Florida), Great Lakes Tour (Ontario), CCPT Quebec Tour, Fore the Players Tour (Florida), Scratch Pro Tour (Arizona) and the Dream Chasers Tour (Arizona). He attended the WEB.com Qualifying School three times and the PGA Tour School once.

Hoffman (2005-09) was instrumental in the resurgence of the Illinois golf program in the Big Ten and nationally. Helping the Illini to back-to-back Big Ten titles (2009, '10), Hoffman was a key player in Illinois advancing to two straight NCAA regional appearances to finish 21st (2009) and 19th (2010) at the NCAA Finals.
He played 113 career rounds (74.61 career average), earned medalist honors at the 2008 Fighting Illini Spring Invitational, and shot a career-low 65 at the 2008 Windon Memorial Classic. He was a 2009 PING All-Midwest Region selection and was awarded the 2010 Kevin Fairfield Memorial Spirit Award at the team honor banquet.
Hoffman went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Illinois in 2010.
* In 2020, the final three spring events and Big Ten/NCAA postseason were canceled due to COVID-19
(1) Hunter Thomson was invited to the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional as an individual (tied for 27th)
