Dylan Murphy joined the University of Michigan men's basketball staff as an assistant coach after spending eight seasons with the Orlando Magic organization, progressing from basketball operations analyst to NBA assistant coach before taking over as head coach of the franchise's NBA G League affiliate.
Murphy spent the previous three seasons (2023-26) as head coach of the Osceola Magic, overseeing all aspects of the franchise's basketball operations while directing the Orlando Magic's player development pipeline. Known for blending relationship-based coaching with an analytics-driven approach to player development, Murphy built an environment centered on individual growth and team success.
Under his leadership, Osceola earned three consecutive Eastern Conference No. 1 playoff seeds. In March 2025, Murphy was named NBA G League Coach of the Month after guiding the Magic to an 11-3 record and the league's top overall playoff seed. He also served as head coach of the Orlando Magic's NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas in 2024.
During his three seasons with Osceola, Murphy coached 2024 NBA G League MVP Mac McClung and helped McClung (2024, 2025) and Lester Quinones (2026) earn All-NBA G League first team honors. Trevelin Queen was named All-NBA G League second team in 2024, while Kevon Harris (2024), Queen (2025) and Quinones (2026) were selected to the NBA G League Next Up Game.
Murphy also helped develop nine players who earned NBA call-ups during his tenure.
Before guiding Osceola, Murphy spent five seasons within the Orlando Magic organization. He served as an assistant coach for three seasons (2020-23) under Steve Clifford and Jamahl Mosley after beginning his tenure as a basketball operations analyst (2018-20).
As an analyst, Murphy provided scouting, game preparation and analytical support before earning a promotion to the coaching staff, where he focused on player development, game planning and opponent preparation while working with players at every stage of their professional careers.
Murphy began his professional coaching career with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League, serving as an assistant coach for three seasons (2013-16). During his tenure, the Mad Ants captured the 2014 league championship after posting a league-best 34-16 regular-season record and completing a perfect 6-0 postseason run. Fort Wayne returned to the league finals in 2015, giving Murphy back-to-back championship series appearances.
Following his time in Fort Wayne, Murphy spent the 2016-17 season as an NBA Development League scout for the Atlanta Hawks, evaluating professional talent and identifying potential call-up candidates. He then briefly served as a graduate assistant at Ball State before joining Orlando in 2018.
Throughout his coaching career, Murphy has built a reputation as one of the game's top young player development coaches. Drawing on experience at both the NBA and G League levels, his approach combines skill development, film study and analytics with an emphasis on communication, accountability and relationship-building to help players maximize their potential and prepare for basketball's highest level.
A native of New York City, Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in classics from Columbia University in 2012 after transferring from Emory University. He and his wife, Sarah (Martin), have one daughter, Kelsey.
