Chris Hunter begins his 10th season with the University of Michigan basketball program. After starting his career at his alma mater as the Director of Program Personnel for three seasons, Hunter has spent the last seven years as the programs Director of Basketball Operations.
For the past decade, Hunter has assisted in the management of the Wolverines budget, scheduling, team travel, training table as well as assisting in the direction of U-M's summer basketball camps. He continues to manage aspects of academics, admissions and financial aid support for players.
While working in Ann Arbor, Hunter has worked under U-M head coaches John Beilein and Juwan Howard. U-M won back-to-back Big Ten Tournament titles (2017, '18) and reached the championship game three straight years. U-M added the program's 15th Big Ten regular season title in 2021. The Wolverines have also had unheralded success with six NCAA Tournament appearances. With five trips to the Sweet 16 among those six appearances, the Maize and Blue had a run to the Final Four and national title game in 2018 as well as the Elite Eight in 2021.
Hunter, who earned a Business Administration degree from U-M's prestigious Stephen M. Ross School of Business, was a key member of U-M's 2004 NIT championship team and 2006 NIT runner-up squad. A team captain during the 2005-06 season, Hunter closed his career playing in 105 games with 730 points (7.0 ppg), 372 rebounds (3.5 rpg), 91 blocks and 50 steals.
Following his four seasons in Ann Arbor, Hunter began a professional career overseas (2006-08) starting with the Herens Basket (Switzerland) before stops with AZS Koszalin (Poland) and Spotter Lueven (Belgium). Returning to the United States, Hunter spent time with the NBA Development League's Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Overall he had three stints with the Mad Ants playing 47 games, where he compiled 44 double figure games. He was named to the 2009 NBADL All Star team and served as team captain. That same season he was named to the All-League second team.
After participating in two training camps as well as off-season activities with the New York Knicks in 2009 -- including preseason games -- under head coach Mike D'Antoni and assistant coach Mike Woodson, Hunter landed with the Golden State Warriors for the 2009-10 season. Playing in 60 games, starting nine, with the Warriors under Don Nelson, Hunter highlighted his season scoring 22 points on eight field goals against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
A native of Gary, Ind., Hunter prepped at Gary West Side High School under Coach John Boyd. An All-State, All-Area and All-League performer, he helped West Side to its first ever Class 4A state championship in 2002. Closing the season averaging 17.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks, Hunter posted a 14 point, 15 rebound and three block effort against Pike (58-55) in the title game. He was named as the AP's Class 4A MVP, the Times of Northwest Indiana Player of the Year and finished fourth in the Indiana Mr. Basketball voting.
He and his wife, Quanda (Brown), have three children -- sons: Christopher (C.J.), Cameron and daughter: Nia.
