
Wolverines to Head North for Island Resort Intercollegiate

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fresh off a season-opening team title and individual medalist honors, the University of Michigan men's golf team heads north to Harris, Mich., for its sixth straight appearance in the Island Resort Intercollegiate, Sunday and Monday (Sept. 6-7). Hosted by South Dakota State, the two-day, 54-hole event will be held at Sage Run Golf Club, which will be set up for a par 72 at 7,200 yards.
Notes
• The Island Resort Intercollegiate features a 12-team field: Ball State, Boise State, Kansas City, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, North Texas, South Dakota State (host), St. Mary's (Calif.), UCF, VCU and West Virginia.
• Michigan will have an eight-member travel party, with juniors Nilay Naik, Dean Muratore and RJ Arone earning starting positions. The remaining two starters and three individual spots will be determined following Saturday's practice round.
• Michigan makes its sixth straight appearance at the Island Resort Intercollegiate and has finished in the top five in all five previous trips to Sage Run Golf Club. The Wolverines have recorded four top-three finishes, highlighted by the 2023 team title. Michigan won the event with an 834 (-30) total, finishing 10 shots ahead of Purdue.
• Last season, U-M posted its best showing at Sage Run, recording a program-record 822 (-42) total to finish third. The Wolverines capped the event with a program-record final-round 267 (-21).
• Nine current Wolverines have competed previously at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, led by Arone's tie for eighth last season at 205 (-11). Arone closed the event with a career-low 65 (-7). Nicolas Simon tied for 12th at 207 (-9), Naik tied for 15th at 208 (-8), Muratore tied for 23rd at 210 (-6) and Jordan Hwang tied for 35th at 213 (-3) in last season's event.
• Michigan has recorded four of its five lowest rounds at the Island Resort Intercollegiate over the last three seasons: 267 (-21) in 2025, 273 (-15) in 2023, 274 (-14) in 2025 and 277 (-11) in 2023.
• Hunter Thomson owns Michigan's best individual finish at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, placing second in 2023 with a 202 (-14) total. Ben Hoagland followed in third at 206 (-10) and posted the Wolverines' best single round at Sage Run with a 64 (-8).
• Muratore also closed last year's tournament with a career-low 65 (-7), while Naik and Hwang each carded 67s. Simon posted a 68, and Johnny Solis added a 68 while competing as an individual.
• Michigan opened the 2026-27 season by winning its third straight Virtues Intercollegiate title, posting an 833 (-31) total to finish 11 shots ahead of host Miami (Ohio). The Wolverines have now won all three of their appearances at the event.
• Naik captured his first collegiate medalist honor with a career-low 203 (-13), winning by three shots after opening the tournament with back-to-back career-best 66s (-6). He totaled 23 birdies over 54 holes. Arone and Muratore joined Naik on the podium, tying for third at 207 (-9). Arone closed with a 68 (-4), while Muratore posted rounds of 67, 69 and 71.
