SEATTLE, Wash. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a 4-2 win over Washington on Sunday (April 5) at Quillian Tennis Stadium to complete a weekend sweep for the Wolverines.
Arnav Bhandari clinched the win for Michigan (9-9, 5-5 Big Ten) at No. 6 singles. In the first set against Nikola Plavsic, the two went serve-for-serve at 5-5 before Plavsic broke Bhandari to take the set, 7-5. Bhandari responded by jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the second set before taking it, 6-4. The third set was all Maize and Blue, as Bhandari grabbed a 4-0 advantage and closed out a 6-2 victory.
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead with the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 after Bjorn Swenson and Alex Cairo earned a 6-1 win at No. 2.
Swenson made quick work of Stephane Kamendje at No. 2 singles to even the team score at 1-1. The No. 86-ranked Swenson broke Kamendje to take the first set, 6-4, and built a 5-0 edge in the second before closing it out, 6-2.
No. 10-ranked Max Dahlin continued his hot streak, earning his 13th consecutive singles win. Dahlin went up 5-1 in the first set against Soham Purohit before being pushed to a tiebreaker. Leading 5-1 in the tiebreak, Dahlin finished it off, 7-5 (5). In the second set, he again built a lead at 3-1 before Purohit closed the gap to 5-4, but Dahlin secured the win on his next service game.
Alex Cairo earned his first dual-match win, defeating Brett Pearson in three sets at No. 4 singles to push Michigan ahead, 3-1. Cairo dropped the first set, 6-3, before responding with a 6-3 second-set win. The third set went back and forth before Cairo won three straight games to take it, 6-3.
Washington cut the deficit to 3-2 with Hyeonseok Seo topping Pierce Shaya in three sets at No. 5.
At that point, Bhandari was leading 5-1 in the third set while Nicholas Steiglehner was tied at 3-3 with Rohan Belday at No. 3 singles before Bhandari closed out the team victory.
Michigan returns home next Saturday (April 11) for a doubleheader at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines will first face Michigan State at approximately 3:30 p.m., following the women's match, before returning at 8 p.m. to take on Toledo.
