ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team struggled to contain the long ball as Indiana hit three home runs to claim the series rubber game, 11-2, in five innings on Sunday afternoon (April 26) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.
All but three of the Hoosiers' runs came off homers, including a first-inning grand slam and a three-run shot in the second to build a sizable early lead.
Michigan answered in the bottom of the first when junior leftfielder Ella Stephenson crushed a two-run homer into the grandstand beyond right-center field for her ninth home run of the season. The Wolverines, however, could not keep pace after Indiana's surge in the second.
Senior second baseman Indiana Langford reached on a leadoff single in the third -- Langford led U-M with two hits -- but Indiana turned a 6-3 double play on a hard-hit ball to short to end the rally.
The Hoosiers pushed the game into run-rule territory with four runs in the top of the fifth, starting with a leadoff home run before using back-to-back free passes and steals to put two in scoring position with no outs. Indiana added a single, sac fly and double to left to plate runs in three of the next four at-bats.
Junior RHP Gabby Ellis (11-6) started and took the loss, allowing seven runs on four hits -- including two home runs -- and one walk over 1.2 innings.
The Wolverines (30-19, 8-13 Big Ten) will close out the regular season with a three-game set at Michigan State next weekend (May 1-3) at Secchia Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday. All three games will be streamed on B1G+.
