Michigan Tests Speed Against No. 2 Texas in Return to Belleville

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan rowing program hosted No. 2-ranked Texas on Saturday (April 11) at Belleville Lake, marking its first home race since 2024. The Wolverines raced six boats at the event but were unable to secure a victory.
The regatta opened in 40-degree temperatures with a light headwind, as Michigan's third and fourth varsity eights took to the water at 8:45 a.m. The boats finished 17.5 and 15.2 seconds behind Texas' 3V8, respectively.
U-M's first varsity eight maintained contact through the halfway point before Texas gained open water. The Longhorns extended their advantage over the final 1,000 meters to win by 17.3 seconds.
The second varsity eight and first varsity four followed similar scripts, with Texas establishing early leads around the 500-meter mark. The 2V8 crossed 15.2 seconds behind, while the 1V4 finished 20.6 seconds off the pace.
Michigan's second varsity four closed the day on the water, staying within striking distance throughout the 2,000 meters. The Wolverines trailed by just 4.9 seconds at the finish, the narrowest margin of the event.
U-M will travel to Sacramento, Calif., next weekend (April 18-19) to compete alongside 18 teams at the Big Ten Invitational. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday.
