ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior centerfielder Jenissa Conway launched a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lift the University of Michigan softball team to a 10-8 walk-off win against Ohio State in the series opener Friday night (April 10) in front of 1,215 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.
After Ohio State plated three runs in the top of the seventh to take a late 8-7 lead, Michigan answered in the bottom half as freshman shortstop Kiley Carr led off with a single through the left side and senior designated player Indiana Langford beat out a bunt single to put two runners on with one out.
Conway, who had been held hitless to that point, blasted a first-pitch no-doubter into the rightfield grandstand to deliver Michigan's first walk-off win of the season. It was her 12th home run of the season and third in as many games.
The teams combined for 29 hits, including 15 from Michigan, and featured four lead changes. Erickson paced the Wolverines with three hits and two RBI, while six different Michigan players recorded multiple hits.
Michigan strung together three singles to score first in the opening frame. Langford started the rally with a high chopper over third, followed by a single up the middle from sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz. With two outs, junior leftfielder Ella Stephenson beat out an infield single to third to drive in the game's first run.
Ohio State answered with a leadoff solo home run in the second, but Michigan responded in the bottom half as Erickson launched a leadoff opposite-field home run to right, her fourth of the season, to reclaim the lead.
The Buckeyes took their first lead in the third on a one-out, two-run home run just inside the rightfield line.
Michigan responded in the bottom half of the inning. After Conway was hit by a pitch to lead off, Putz delivered an RBI single into the left-center gap. Defensive miscues extended the inning, and Erickson added an RBI double off the wall in left center. Following a delay to repair the pitcher's landing area, Michigan added back-to-back RBI singles from Carr and senior second baseman Janelle Ilacqua to chase the Buckeye starter and build a 7-3 advantage.
The middle innings featured strong defensive moments. In the fourth, Michigan turned a strikeout-throwout double play, and in the sixth, a 3-5 double play helped maintain the lead. U-M recorded a season-high three double plays in the contest.
An Ohio State two-run home run in the fifth cut the lead to 7-5. After Michigan stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, the Buckeyes capitalized on the same situation in the seventh, using a bases-clearing triple off the rightfield wall to take the lead and set the stage for the walk-off.
Freshman RHP Grayson LaMarche (4-2) earned the win in relief, her second in a row, after entering in the seventh and recording the final two outs on consecutive groundouts.
Michigan (25-14, 5-8 Big Ten) will continue the series against Ohio State (19-20, 7-6 Big Ten) on Saturday (April 11) at 11 a.m., an hour earlier than originally scheduled, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium. The game will air on the Big Ten Network, and tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
