LEWISBURG, Penn. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan water polo team improved to 9-6 with a pair of victories Sunday (Feb. 22) at Kinney Natatorium. The Wolverines opened the day by handing No. 7-ranked Harvard (11-1) its first loss of the season, 14-13, before rolling past Bucknell (7-5), 20-7.

Michigan controlled the first half, holding Harvard to three goals while scoring nine of its own. Bailee Swindells recorded a first-half hat trick and added an assist on a goal by Ari Karampetsou.

Emma Gustafsson and Swindells each scored twice during a 5-0 run in the opening quarter, with Emilia Mladjan adding another tally. Sophia Bunnell shut out the Crimson until the closing seconds of the first quarter, allowing just one goal in the frame.

Harvard mounted a fourth-quarter comeback attempt, scoring seven times in the final period, but goals from Issy Jackson and Karampetsou helped Michigan hold on for the 14-13 win.

#14 Michigan 20, Bucknell 7

Michigan broke the game open in the third quarter against Bucknell, scoring seven unanswered goals. Three of the seven came from Gustafsson, who recorded her third multi-goal performance of the weekend.

The Wolverines built early momentum with four first-quarter goals from four different scorers: Karampetsou, Harriet Dickens, Jackson and Lulu Hirschfield. Michigan limited Bucknell to two goals in the opening frame.

Michigan posted its highest scoring output of the season in the 20-7 victory and remains undefeated in conference play.

The Wolverines continue their spring break trip Saturday (Feb. 28), traveling west to face No. 2-ranked UCLA at 1 p.m. PT.
