Michigan Win Streak Snapped in Loss to No. 2 UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan water polo team fell to No. 2-ranked UCLA, 17-8, on Saturday (Feb. 28) at Spieker Aquatics Center. Emma Gustafsson led the Wolverines with three goals and an assist, extending her streak to seven consecutive multi-goal games.
Michigan (10-7) struck first as Ari Karampetsou won the opening sprint and converted on the ensuing possession. The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, with Emilia Mladjan recording a goal and an assist after setting up Gustafsson on a tap-in to tie the game at 4-4 at the end of the opening frame.
Gustafsson added a penalty goal early in the second quarter, but UCLA responded with three unanswered scores to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Issy Jackson scored Michigan's lone goal of the third quarter off a pass from Gustafsson, who later added her third goal of the contest in the fourth. UCLA pulled away in the second half, though Kaia Levenfeld capped the scoring with a buzzer-beating goal to make the final margin 17-8.
Michigan will continue play on Monday (March 2) against Biola University at 1 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed on Team 1 Sports.
