ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Following a nearly three-month winter training break, the University of Michigan women's golf team will head south to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, for the Puerto Rico Classic, running Sunday through Tuesday (Feb. 1-3). Hosted by Purdue, the three-day, 54-hole tournament features an 18-team field competing at Grand Reserve Golf Club, a par-72 layout measuring 6,305 yards.
Notes
• The Wolverines, ranked 44th, will join a strong field that includes No. 4 Arkansas, No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 20 Northwestern, Furman, Georgia Southern, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, LSU, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Florida, North Texas, Purdue (host) and UNC Wilmington.
• Michigan will bring five starters to open the spring, led by senior sisters Lauren Sung and Sydney Sung. Freshman Reese Ng, sophomore Thomasine Bartholdson and senior Mara Janess complete the lineup, while freshman Jaymie Ng will make her collegiate debut after missing the fall with an injury, competing as an individual.
• Michigan returns to the Puerto Rico Classic for the first time in nine years, last competing in the event to open the 2017 spring season. Playing at Rio Mar Country Club, the Wolverines recorded a program-best ninth-place finish (896), led by former All-American Elodie Van Dievoet's tie for 12th (219).
• The Wolverines will make their 11th appearance at the Puerto Rico Classic, having competed in Purdue's event for 10 consecutive seasons from 2008-17. In addition to its program-best ninth-place finish in 2017, U-M has tied for 11th once (2009), finished 12th three times (2010, 2012, 2013), placed 13th twice (2011, 2014) and finished 15th three times (2008, 2015, 2016).
• Michigan has produced a top-25 individual finish at the Puerto Rico Classic in five of its 10 appearances, with Meagan Bauer recording the program's best individual result by tying for 11th (222) in 2011.
• During the winter break, Bartholdson stayed active on the international stage, competing twice in Chile. She captured the Los Leones Open title and followed it with a third-place finish at the XL Cachagua Golf Open, carrying strong momentum into the spring.
• Michigan's four-event fall slate was highlighted by a third-place finish at the Wolverine Invitational. Sung led the Wolverines in two events and closed the fall with a team-best 71.64 scoring average, including four sub-par rounds. Her runner-up finish at the Wolverine Invitational marked a career best.
• Freshman Vanessa Zhang made an immediate impact, earning lineup spots in the final three fall tournaments. She opened her collegiate career with three straight top-20 finishes and averaged 73.09 strokes per round, ranking third on the team.
• The Wolverine Invitational provided a preview of the U-M Golf Course, which will serve as one of six NCAA regional sites in May -- the second time in four years under head coach Jan Dowling. In her 13 seasons at the helm, Dowling has guided Michigan to eight NCAA postseason appearances, including four trips to the NCAA Finals.
