ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the fifth straight season opener, the University of Michigan men's golf team heads to the Upper Peninsula and Bark River, Mich., to play in South Dakota State's Island Resort Intercollegiate, Sunday and Monday (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) at the Sage Run Golf Club. The 12-team field will play 54 holes (36-18) at Sage Run Golf Club.
Notes
• The Island Resort field will be made up of 12 teams, including Ball State, Central Florida, Illinois State, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Purdue, Saint Mary's, South Dakota State, UTEP and West Virginia.
• U-M will travel five starters and three individuals to the Island Resort. Freshman Jordan Hwang and sophomores Nilay Naik, Dean Muratore, Nicolas Simon and RJ Arone make up the U-M starting five. Freshmen Jack Harrington, Tristan Wieland and sophomore Johnny Solis will travel and play as individuals.
• Michigan makes its fifth trip to the Island Resort Intercollegiate in Bark River, Mich. After back-to-back third-place team finishes in 2021 (880) and 2022 (860), Hunter Thomson's runner-up finish paced a record-breaking performance for the Maize and Blue in 2023 as the Wolverines won the team title with an 834 (-30). Last season, U-M had three Wolverines among the top 20 and closed fifth.
• With the graduation of All-American Thomson, Yuqi Liu and Ben Hoagland, Michigan has a 10-golfer roster made up entirely of underclassmen. The young Wolverines will look to rely on the experiences gained last season by Muratore and Arone. Muratore started 11 of 12 events in his rookie campaign, while averaging 73.06 per round with four top-15 individual finishes. Arone started all 12 of his events and posted a 73.40 average, with three top-15 finishes and finishing among the top three Wolverines in seven events.
• U-M welcomes four newcomers, including the signing of 2025 NCAA Division III All-American Naik, who played his freshman season at Pomona Pitzer in Claremont, Calif. During the November signing period, U-M signed Hwang, Harrington and Wieland, who are all expected to battle for starting spots.
• Michigan has a balanced regular season with five fall and five spring events. This fall, the Wolverines make return trips to the Island Resort Intercollegiate and Canadian Collegiate (Sept. 14-16), before coach Zach Barlow's squad highlights the top half of the schedule playing in the inaugural Jim DeLapa Collegiate (Sept. 28-29) at Benton Harbor's famed Point O' Woods Golf and Country Club. The Maize and Blue close with trips to Kentucky's Cullan Brown Collegiate (Oct. 6-7) and Miami (Ohio)'s Morian Intercollegiate (Oct. 13-14).
