LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the sixth straight year, the organization announced Monday (July 21).
Michigan received the award for the first time following the 2019-20 season. The award was instituted in the 1992-93 academic year to honor volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale. A total of 234 Division I women's programs earned the award this year, joining eight other Big Ten schools to earn the honor.
"Academics is a huge priority for us here at the University of Michigan," said head coach Erin Virtue. "Within the Michigan Volleyball program, we want to see success on the court, in the classroom and in their personal lives. A Michigan degree means something and we are committed to emphasizing that importance to prepare our student-athletes for the eventual life after volleyball."
The Wolverines placed 10 student-athletes on the fall Academic All-Big Ten list, including Allison Jacobs, who had a perfect 4.0 GPA. Jacobs, along with Morgan Burke, Maddi Cuchran and Serena Nyambio, were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team after meeting athletic and academic requirements. On July 14, four Wolverines also received Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors for recording a GPA above 3.7 for the school year.
