WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program set itself up to race in petite finals following its performances on day two of the NCAA Championship on Saturday (May 31).
After races were moved up to accommodate for inclement afternoon weather, rowers dealt with difficult conditions. Early morning temperature measured at 59 degrees with the occasional drizzle and up to 25 mile per hour wind gusts.
Michigan competed in three A/B semifinal events Saturday, with the goal of earning its way into grand finals on Sunday. This required boats to finish in the top three of their races to have a chance to take home the season's ultimate prize. Otherwise, those boats will go on to compete in petite finals for spots seven through 12.
The early morning saw the 1V8 take the water first in a competitive field consisting of Michigan and five of the top seven ranked teams in the nation. The Wolverines entered a competition for fourth place with No. 6 Princeton and No. 7 Rutgers but trailed the pack for most of the race. U-M finished in sixth place in the race and qualified itself for a petite final tomorrow.
In the 2V8, the Wolverines raced with No. 8 Brown and No. 13 Harvard to capture fourth place after losing seats on third place -- the No. 5 Yale boat -- early. Michigan held seats on the Bulldogs and remained just ahead of Brown and Harvard positioned in the farthest lanes from U-M as the teams entered the final 500 meters. A late move by Brown led to a Michigan fifth-place finish by just one seat.
In the 1V4, Yale took an early lead on the rest of the field, with a close race ensuing for the next five spots. Washington and Rutgers moved ahead with Cal taking hold of fourth place by the midpoint of the race. U-M and Brown entered a bow-for-bow battle through the remaining 1,000 meters. After another late move by the Bears, the Wolverines fell back to sixth place and set themselves up to race in another petite final.
The NCAA Championship will conclude Sunday (June 1) in West Windsor, N.J., with Michigan competing all three of its boats in petite finals. Races will start at 8 a.m. and be followed by an awards ceremony. All will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.
