INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan rowing program finished third overall at the Big Ten Championship on Sunday (May 18). Four bronze medal boats contributed to the Wolverines' finish (1V8, 2V8, 1V4, and 2V4) in Sunday's grand finals.
Finals day action included a total of 14 races, with petite and grand finals for all seven boat classes. U-M qualified for grand finals in each event during Saturday's heats, setting the stage for a great day of racing.
Sunny, blue skies and 60-degree weather shone on Eagle Creek Park for finals day, which was dominated by the Washington Huskies' seven first-place boat finishes and Big Ten champion crowning.
Entering the 1V8 race, U-M was firmly positioned in third place and locked in that placement with a bronze medal performance. The day's premiere race was competitive, as the Wolverines matched Washington and Rutgers' strokes through the first 1,000 meters of the race, even holding a three-seat lead at certain points.
The Huskies made a move in the next 500 and pulled beyond the Wolverines as the boats entered the final sprint. The Wolverines entered a dual for second place with Rutgers in the final 500 meters, but U-M could not prevail. The bronze medal performance earned the Maize and Blue 81 points and a third-place overall finish.
The 2V8 also placed third in its grand final, a race which was dominated by the Huskies. Michigan, two lanes over from weekend foe Rutgers, entered a battle for second place. Over the third 500, Rutgers made a move, but the Wolverines refused to let them pull away, holding their stern as the boats approached the final sprint. Rutgers managed to find open water, and Michigan rowed smoothly into third place for a 54-point performance.
U-M's first medalist boat was its 2V4, a similar race which quickly became a match for second place between the Wolverines and Scarlett Knights. In the latter 1,000 meters, Rutgers pulled ahead by more than a boat length. Michigan held third place standing by three boats lengths over USC and Ohio State over the remainder of the race to earn bronze and 18 points.
The 1V4 grand final saw a four-team battle for second place throughout the race. With the Huskies out ahead, Rutgers, Minnesota, Ohio State and Michigan traded strokes through the first 1,000 meters. The Scarlett Knights took seats as the boats entered the final sprint, but the Wolverines responded with a move of their own. The boats were even at the 250-meter mark, but Rutgers managed to hold off the Maize and Blue by just two seats in the day's tightest finish.
The 2N8, 1N8, and 3V4 finals opened the final day of Big Ten racing and saw the Wolverines accrue three fourth place finishes.
Big Ten champion Washington are the conference's only automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships (May 30-June 1), to be held at Lake Carnegie in West Windsor, N.J., later this month. The Wolverines will await NCAA Selection announcement on Tuesday (May 20).
