
U-M Trio Earns CSC Academic All-District Honors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Patorn Hanchaikul, Mert Oral and Nicholas Steiglehner of the University of Michigan men's tennis team were named to the 2024-25 Academic All-District Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, on Tuesday afternoon (May 13).
To receive the honor, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of classes, have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and have been in 70 percent of the team's matches.
Hanchaikul earned his degree in engineering this spring, while helping the Wolverines earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. He recorded a 13-12 singles record, including a 10-10 dual match record, while playing at Nos. 2-5. Ranked No. 113 in the preseason singles rankings, Hanchaikul posted two wins over ranked opponents. He owned a 13-12 doubles record, going 11-11 in dual play and was ranked in the preseason doubles rankings at No. 89. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Hanchaikul concludes his collegiate career with 46 singles wins and 36 doubles victories. This is his second all-district honor.
Oral captured his first all-district honor with a 10-12 singles record, which included a 5-7 dual mark and a 4-3 record against Big Ten competition. A native of Ann Arbor, Oral was second on the team in matches clinched, winning matches for the Wolverines against Penn State and Northwestern twice. An engineering major, Oral posted a 10-10 record in doubles and went 8-5 in dual play and 5-1 in the Big Ten, which included a career-best four-match win streak.
Steiglhener collects his second straight all-district honor. A native of New York City, Steiglehner posted a 15-18 singles mark, going 11-12 in dual play and 6-5 in the Big Ten. He led the team in matches clinched, securing team wins with singles victories against Tennessee, Harvard, Purdue and Indiana. His win over Tennessee sent Michigan to the ITA Indoor National Championships. A junior majoring in business administration, he added four doubles wins.
Michigan posted a 15-13 overall record and reached the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, where it fell to eventual champion UCLA. The Wolverines ranked as high as No. 14 during the season and made their ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the program's 34th overall.
