EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at No. 6 Oregon, 5-4 and 9-1 in five innings, on Saturday (April 5) at the Ducks' Jane Sanders Stadium.
Michigan lost a heartbreaker in the day's first game after taking a two-run lead into the seventh. The Ducks loaded the bases with no outs on two hit-by-pitches and a single before scoring on a groundout to short and a wild pitch to the backstop to knot up the score. With two outs and the bases again loaded, Oregon drove a bouncing single up the middle to plate the game-winning run.
The Ducks (35-3, 8-3 Big Ten) had not scored since the first inning when they led off with two free passes and manufactured runs on a sacrifice fly and two-out single up the middle to take an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn settled in after the opening frame; in all, she posted five strikeouts and allowed three runs on just three hits and three walks over six innings.
Michigan scored two runs apiece in the second and third frames to take its first lead of the series. Oregon intentionally walked junior third baseman Maddie Erickson to put runners on the corners with two outs, and junior first baseman Madi Ramey made them pay with a scorched two-run double into the right-center gap.
Sophomore center fielder Jenissa Conway crushed her team-best 13th home run of the season -- and sixth over the last four games -- in the third inning with a monster two-run blast off the top of the right-field scoreboard. Conway led Michigan with four hits, three runs and three RBI over the three-game series.
The Wolverines stayed close in the second game until Oregon busted it open with a seven-run fourth.
The Ducks first got on the board with two runs in the third. Michigan nearly got out of a bases-loaded jam, earning the second out at the plate before Oregon looped a two-out, two-strike single over third base and on the left-field line. Michigan got one back in its next turn. Conway and freshman designated player Lauren Putz led off with back-to-back singles and when a Putz steal attempt induced an errant throw into the outfield, Conway trotted home to score from third base.
Oregon responded and then some in the home half of the inning and, like the third inning, all seven runs came with two outs after Michigan got the second out at home plate. The Ducks plated runs in each of the next four at-bats with two RBI singles followed by back-to-back home runs.
Senior RHP Lauren Derkowski (10-9) took both losses on the day, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in the first game and nine runs -- seven earned -- on nine hits and five walks in the second. She totaled four strikeouts on the day.
Up next, Michigan (27-12, 6-4 Big Ten) will host Central Michigan at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (April 9) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
