MANHEIM, Pa. -- University of Michigan wrestling junior/sophomore Nolan Wertanen was named to the Division I Scholar All-America Team, as announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) on Wednesday (April 2). The NWCA's individual list included 336 total wrestlers from 77 institutions.
It is Wertanen's first NWCA Scholar All-America honor after garnering Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar laurels last season. An industrial and operations engineering major, he is slated to graduate from Michigan this spring in just three years.
Wertanen posted a 7-20 record this season and bumped up to the starting spot at 133 pounds after a season-ending injury to Dylan Ragusin. Wertanen snagged the final automatic qualifying allocation with a 10th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships to compete in his first NCAA Championships. Wertnanen also appeared in the Wolverines' lineup at 125 pounds for three dual meets last season, going 2-1 in those matches.
NWCA Scholar All-Americans are recognized based on four tiers: an All-American with a 3.00 grade-point average, a national qualifier with a 3.2 GPA, a conference tournament participant with a 3.5 GPA and a wrestler with at least 15 matches and a 60 percent win record with a 3.5 GPA.
