ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team closed out its weekend series with an 8-4 win Monday afternoon (April 14), completing the sweep over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field. The win marks Bonnie Tholl's 100th career win as a head coach.
Michigan jumped ahead early, adding three runs in each of the first two innings. Senior outfielder Ellie Sieler provided the Wolverines with a spark in the first inning, roping a two-out, two-RBI double off the centerfield wall.
Junior second baseman Indiana Langford and sophomore outfielder Ella Stephenson posted two hits apiece in the first two innings, with the latter driving a base-clearing, three-RBI double down the leftfield line. Langford led the team with three hits.
Senior pitcher Lauren Derkowski (12-9) earned her 12th win of the season in the circle with a solid 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. She struck out six batters and allowed only two hits in the first four innings.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Hoehn entered to pitch and recorded the final out in the top of the fifth inning, stranding two runners. Hoehn earned the save in relief with two hits and two walks allowed through the final 2.1 innings.
Rutgers scored its first run on its third hit of the game -- a leadoff homer in the top of the fifth. After two free passes and a single loaded the bases, a soft-hit double into shallow left field added two more runs.
The Wolverines responded in the next half inning, highlighted by a two-run inside-the-park home run. After a leadoff single, senior shortstop Ella McVey looped a soft liner into shallow left field. The Rutgers outfielder misjudged the path and McVey rounded the bases before the ball could get back to the infield. It was McVey's first collegiate home run and Michigan's first inside-the-park home run since Langford's three-run inside-the-parker against Toledo (March 27, 2024).
The Scarlet Knights narrowed the final deficit in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI after a walk and single put two runners on. Hoehn rebounded and used a groundout to end the game.
Michigan (31-12, 9-4 Big Ten) will return to action with a three-game road set against rival Ohio State at 6 p.m. on Friday (April 18) before squaring off at 2 p.m. Saturday (April 19) and 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 20) at Buckeye Field. The weekend series will air on B1G+.
