Michigan Suffers Setback at USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Southern California on Sunday (April 13) at the Marks Tennis Stadium.
USC took advantage of a depleted Michigan lineup by claiming the doubles point and winning three singles matches in straight sets.
Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral had a chance to win at No. 2 doubles after breaking for a 5-4 lead, but the Trojans broke back, and the match was left unfinished at 5-5. Will Cooksey and Alex Cairo fell 6-0 at No. 1, while Patorn Hanchaikul and Nicholas Steiglehner dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 3.
In singles, Cairo and Steiglehner lost in straight sets at No. 5 and 4, respectively, before No. 80-ranked Cooksey was defeated at No. 1 by No. 23 Peter Makk.
Swenson battled back from a 3-0 deficit to 5-5 in his first set at No. 2, but dropped the final two games. The second set was left unfinished with Swenson trailing 2-1. Oral also mounted a comeback in his first set at No. 6, cutting a 3-0 deficit to 4-4 before falling 6-4. He led 3-2 in the second set before play was halted.
Michigan will wrap up the regular season on Saturday (April 19) with a noon match at Michigan State in East Lansing.
