OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The University of Michigan softball team used 11 hits and two home runs to earn an 8-1 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday (March 23) at Devon Park, completing a weekend sweep and remaining unbeaten in Big Ten play.
Freshman Lauren Putz went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two runs scored to lead the Michigan (24-8, 4-0 Big Ten) offense. Senior Ellie Sieler added a three-run homer,  her first of the season, as part of a two-hit, three-RBI day. Sophomore Jenissa Conway chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Michigan got on the board in the second inning when junior Maddie Erickson grounded out to drive in Putz. In the third, Conway beat out an infield single to score freshman Cece Thorington and junior Indiana Langford after a Badger throwing error. Putz followed with an RBI single to right center, capping off a 10-pitch at-bat and pushing the lead to 4-0.
After starter sophomore Erin Hoehn threw three innings, freshman Kat Meyers entered in the fourth and quickly stranded two Wisconsin runners to preserve the shutout. Meyers ran into trouble in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but senior Lauren Derkowski came on in relief and retired the side to escape the jam.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sieler launched a two-out, three-run home run to left field, extending Michigan's lead to 7-0. An inning later, junior Jannelle Ilacqua came off the bench to deliver an RBI single down the left field line, scoring junior Madi Ramey.
Three pitchers combined in the victory, with Derkowski earning her 10th win of the season. She tossed the final three innings, allowing no runs and recording two strikeouts.
Michigan will return home to begin its first homestand of the season on Tuesday (March 25), hosting Western Michigan at 5 p.m. at Carol Hutchins Stadium. The Wolverines will then welcome Michigan State for a three-game Big Ten series beginning Friday (March 28) at 5 p.m. All games will stream live on B1G+.
