MADISON, WIS. -- Senior Patorn Hanchaikul delivered the match-clincher for the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team, winning in the third set at No. 3 singles, as the Wolverines rallied to defeat Wisconsin 4-3 on Sunday (March 16) at the Nielson Tennis Center.
The Wolverines overcame adversity after dropping the doubles point and being without their top two players in the singles lineup.
Junior Nicholas Steiglehner stepped up at No. 4 singles, playing in the position for the first time this season. He gave up just one game to Matthew Fullerton, winning 6-1, 6-0 to earn his 10th singles victory of the year.
Hanchaikul and junior Mert Oral both won their first sets, while Bjorn Swenson rebounded with a dominant 6-0 second set after dropping his first to Patrik Meszaros at No. 2.
The Badgers extended their lead to 3-1 with wins at No. 5 and No. 1, where sophomore Alex Cairo and senior Will Cooksey played their first career matches in those positions.
Oral pulled Michigan within one, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win over Colin Beduhn at No. 6 just as Hanchaikul entered a third set and Swenson remained knotted at 3-3 in his third.
Leading 5-4 and receiving, Swenson broke Meszaros to take the 6-4 third set, tying the team match at 3-3.
Hanchaikul took control early in his third set, racing out to a 3-0 lead while Swenson's match concluded. He continued his momentum, pushing the advantage to 5-0 over Tomas Zlatohlavek. Zlatohlavek managed to get on the board, but Hanchaikul sealed the win with a perfect service game, claiming the final set 6-1 and securing the team victory for Michigan.
Michigan travels to Purdue for a match on Friday (March 21) at 4 p.m. CT.
