ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team posted a season-high score on Senior Day to top No. 3 Ohio State 328.100-322.00 on Saturday (March 15) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan led after the floor exercise, but the Buckeyes took the lead until impressive finishes on parallel bars and high bar gave U-M the win. The Maize and Blue swept the floor and high bar podiums, while three Wolverines won event titles in Charlie Larson (floor exercise), Logan McKeown (parallel bars), and Paul Juda (high bar).
The program's nine seniors -- Javier Alfonso, Syam Buradagunta, Juda, McKeown, Rithik Puri, Chris Read, Evgeny Siminiuc, and David Wolma -- were honored following the meet as part of Senior Day festivities.
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
Despite a 12.250 on Pierce Wolfgang's leadoff routine, the Wolverines maintained the edge over OSU at the end of the rotation. Larson won the event for the fourth time this season, sticking the dismount and earning a 14.000 as the anchor. Freshman Solen Chiodi was just 0.100 points shy of his personal best with 13.800 to finish second, with Wolma scoring a season best of 13.650. U-M leads 54.000-53.650.
Pommel Horse
Freshman Aaronson Mansberger earned a new team- and personal-best score of 14.600, finishing first for the Wolverines and second overall. Juda made his season debut on the pommel horse and scored a 13.950, finishing third overall. U-M mistakes and a huge 15.050 from Ohio State's Parker Thackston gave the Buckeyes the event win, 55.400-53.550, and the overall lead. OSU leads, 109.050-107.550.
Still Rings
U-M took silver and bronze, with Puri finishing second with a season-best 14.000 and Juda finishing third (13.900). Alfonso made his season debut, posting a 13.550. A 14.200 from Buckeye Tyler Rockwood as the anchor gave Ohio State a 54.650-54.250 edge in the rotation and widened the Michigan gap. OSU leads, 163.700-161.800.
Vault
Chodi scored a 14.450, smashing his previous career-best (13.900) to finish second, while Wolma earned a season-best 14.400 for a third-place finish. Big scores of 14.200 from Larson and a 13.650 from Robert Noll were enough to give the Wolverines a 56.700-55.900 rotation finish to begin chipping away at OSU's lead. OSU leads, 219.600-218.500.
Parallel Bars
High scores from the Wolverines and a 12.000 in the anchor position for the Buckeyes pulled U-M ahead once again. McKeown earned the event title with a 14.150, the third time this season the senior has scored above 14.000. Juda's stuck landing and 13.650, along with Siminiuc's 13.550, gave Michigan a narrow 0.300-point team lead. Michigan leads, 272.700-272.400.
High Bar
Juda took the high bar title with a season-best 14.300, with Siminiuc finishing second and tying his season best of 14.000. Wolfgang and Noll each scored a 13.550 to tie for third with Kristian Grahovski of OSU. Scores of 12.500 and 10.400 to open Ohio State's rotation were too much for the Buckeyes to overcome. Michigan wins, 328.100-322.00.
