LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated No. 3 Nebraska 335.950-335.200 on Friday night (March 21) at Devaney Center, claiming a share of the Big Ten regular-season title with No. 4 Penn State. This is the fifth regular-season title U-M has won.
The Wolverines posted a nation-leading score and are just one of three teams to score higher than 330.000 this season. Fred Richard picked up a pair of event titles, with Charlie Larson and Aaronson Mansberger each winning one.
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
Freshman Solen Chiodi earned a season-high score of 14.600, his first floor score above 14.000 and the highest score for the team entering the meet. Richard scored a 14.200 to match his season high. Larson won his fifth floor title of the season, posting a career-high and nation-leading score of 14.850 All four scores were above 14.000. U-M leads, 57.950-56.700.
Pommel Horse
A mistake on the dismount from Zach Granados opened the door for the Huskers to take a 0.050 lead after the leadoff routines from each team. Paul Juda put up a solid 13.600 to tie for fourth, but a 14.450 from Mansberger to close out the rotation was enough for the Wolverines to maintain the lead. U-M leads, 111.700-111.150.
Still Rings
Akshay Puri and Rithik Puri each scored a 13.800 to open the rotation, with Juda adding a 13.900. Nebraska had a 0.250-point lead heading into each team's final routines, but a season-high score of 14.300 from Richard was not enough to close the gap and Nebraska took the lead. Nebraska leads, 167.800-167.500.
Vault
Chiodi added his second straight score above 14.000 with a 14.100, but the Huskers were able to widen their lead and pull ahead by 1.350 points despite another season-high score (14.300) from Richard. Nebraska leads, 225.000-223.650.
Parallel Bars
The Wolverines bounced back with a nation-leading 14.950 from Richard, cutting their deficit to 0.350. Anchor Logan McKeown needed a score of 13.350 to tie the meet with one rotation left, but the senior scored a 13.850 to help Michigan retake the lead. U-M leads, 280.400-279.600.
High Bar
With an edge of just 0.800 heading into the final rotation, Pierce Wolfgang (13.650) and Evgeny Siminiuc (13.700) put U-M in a good spot with two routines left. Juda posted a solid 13.700 and Richard's second-highest score of the season (14.350) was good for the event title. The Huskers needed a score of 14.700 to tie, but a 13.950 from Taylor Christopulos was not enough and sealed the win for the Wolverines. U-M wins, 335.950-335.200.
