CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team stormed back in singles action, taking the first four matches off court to rally for a 4-1 win over No. 11-ranked Texas on Sunday afternoon in consolation action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Michigan took the first doubles match to finish behind a 6-1 win at No. 2 from Julia Fliegner and Reese Miller. After Texas won at No. 1, Michigan had a pair of match points at No. 3 but could not convert either as the Longhorns eventually won in a breaker to secure the first point of the match.
U-M quickly responded in singles action, taking five first sets from the Longhorns when Fliegner ground out a 9-7 tiebreak win at No. 1.
Piper Charney pulled Michigan even at 1-1 behind a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. After Texas held serve to start the match, Charney ripped off five straight games for a 5-1 lead en route to the 6-2 win. It was all Charney in the second set as she tied the team score with the straight-set win.
Miller gave Michigan a 2-1 lead, an advantage the Wolverines never gave back. Miller was down 4-0 in the first set before winning six straight games to take the first set on a double fault. She raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and never gave the break back to pick up the win.
Lily Jones put Michigan on the brink of victory, getting a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3. She went up a break at 4-3 in the first set and consolidated it in the next game to get the first-set win. Jones won the first two games of the second set, and much like the first, never gave the break back to put Michigan's third point on the board.
Fliegner did the honors for Michigan, breezing to a 6-1 second-set win after she pulled out a 9-7 tiebreak win in the first set. Fliegner fell behind 2-0 in the early going but climbed back in the set by winning three straight games to get back on serve. After getting the win in the breaker, she won the first three games of the second set to ease to the win for the final point of the match.
Michigan is back in action next weekend with a pair in North Carolina, starting with a Friday (Feb. 14) match at NC State at 3 p.m. U-M closes the weekend on Sunday (Feb. 16) with an 11 a.m. match at Duke.
