Wolverines Fall to NC State to Kick Off Road Trip

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 match at No. 19 NC State on Friday afternoon (Feb. 14) at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The match, played on four indoor courts, lasted more than four hours with U-M's pair of freshman regulars on court at the end.
NC State struck first, taking the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Playing on four courts, singles play started with matches 1-4. Michigan took first sets at No. 1 from Julia Fliegner and at No. 4 from Reese Miller.
Fliegner put the Wolverines on the board, winning 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot over No. 52 Michaela Laki. At the same time, Piper Charney won a 6-1 second set to split and stay on court at No. 2.
The tie was short-lived as the Wolfpack countered with a straight-set win at No. 3 to take a 2-1 lead. With those matches ending in short order, Michigan's freshmen Emily Sartz-Lunde and Jessica Bernales headed out on court.
The Wolfpack's lead grew to 3-1 with a win at No. 4. Charney delivered moments later, coming through with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to pull Michigan within a point at 3-2. She jumped out to early leads in the final two sets, keeping the break the rest of the way to record the victory.
Bernales captured a first-set win at No. 6, winning the first three games en route to a 6-3 win. Sartz-Lunde dropped her first set at No. 5 before rallying for a 6-3 win in the second set to force a deciding third.
Bernales fell in her second set, sending both matches left on court to deciding third sets.
NC State clinched the team match behind a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. The remaining match was played as the Pack won at No. 5 for a 5-2 final margin.
U-M completes a two-match swing in North Carolina on Sunday morning (Feb. 16), playing at Duke at 11 a.m.
