Michigan Wins 200 Free Relay Title, Sits Second After Night Two of B1G Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team maintained its momentum on Thursday (Feb. 27), winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in record time and adding a trio of silver medals on the second day of the Big Ten Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. After two days of competition, Michigan sits second with 419.5 points.
The quartet of Colin Geer, Tyler Ray, Bence Szabados and Jack Wilkening ended the night with a flourish, winning the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:14.83. The time marks a new program record and the Big Ten Championship meet record. It is Michigan's seventh all-time win in the event and its first since 2018.
U-M put together a strong effort on the first morning session of the championships, placing seven swimmers in finals across three events. Eduardo Moraes kicked off the evening session with a silver medal in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:12.72. Lorne Wigginton took fourth with a mark of 4:15.25.
In the 200-yard IM, Gal Groumi grabbed another silver medal for U-M, clocking a 1:40.34. Colin Geer finished fourth with a mark of 1:40.65, and Eitan Ben-Shitrit took eighth with a time of 1:43.00.
Tyler Ray closed out the individual events with a silver in the 50-yard freestyle, throwing down a time of 18.83 seconds. Bence Szabados took fifth with a mark of 19.06.
In diving, Cameron Gammage advanced to the consolation final of the one-meter dive and finished 13th with a score of 312.45.
U-M will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 28) for the third day of the Big Ten Championships. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. CST with finals beginning at 5 p.m. CST.
