
Ray Wins 100 Fly Gold, Michigan Holds Second at Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team broke multiple school records on Friday (Feb. 28) on the third day of the Big Ten Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. After three days, Michigan has tallied 784.5 points and sits second behind Indiana (1,067).
The Wolverines placed eight swimmers into championship finals across five events, including two top seeds. Tyler Ray swam 44.30 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly to earn the middle lane, and Gal Groumi posted a time of 1:32.54 in the 200-yard freestyle to lead the pack.
In the finals, Ray followed up with an even faster swim in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a mark of 44.28 to win the event and set a new program record in the process. Ray's win marks the 18th for the program in the event at the conference championships.
Freshman Lorne Wigginton made a statement in the 400-yard IM, taking silver with a time of 3:39.76. Groumi followed up with a time of 1:31.57 in the 200 free to capture silver. Eitan Ben-Shitrit grabbed fourth with a mark of 1:32.63.
Ozan Kalafat placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 51.53, and Jack Wilkening finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 45.44.
The Wolverines closed out the third night of competition with a silver medal in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Wilkening, Ray, Kalafat and Groumi set a new school record with a time of 3:02.77.
Michigan will wrap up the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (March 1) at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. CST, with finals getting underway at 5 p.m. CST.
