COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team got off to a fast start on Wednesday (Feb. 19) during the first day of the Big Ten Championships at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Michigan swept the relays and tallied 128 points through two events to lead the field. No. 7 Indiana is second with 108 points, while Ohio State sits third with 106 points. Wednesday marked the first time since 1999 that U-M has won the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay in the same Big Ten Championships meet.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Casey Chung, Letitia Sim, Brady Kendall and Lindsay Flynn came from behind to win the race and capture its first Big Ten title of the meet with a time of 1:34.42. It was the first time the Wolverines have won the 200 medley relay since 2020. The winning time was just .18 seconds shy of the Michigan program record set in 2020.
Following the exhibition team dive event, Malia Amuan, Stephanie Balduccini, Hannah Bellard and Christey Liang hit the pool for the 800-yard freestyle relay and broke the meet record with a winning time of 6:52.04, outracing second-place Ohio State by more than two seconds for the conference crown, U-M's first since 2021.
Michigan will return to the pool on Thursday (Feb. 20) for the second day of the Big Ten Championships. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m., and the final heats will begin at 5:30 p.m.
