TULSA, Okla. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team started strong with a dominant first-round win but went 1-2 at the National Duals Invitational on Saturday (Nov. 15) at the BOK Center.
U-M cruised past Arizona State, 30-10, before falling to No. 2 Nebraska, 24-14, in the quarterfinals and No. 16 Missouri, 26-10, in the consolation bracket. With the day-one results, Michigan is out of the running for the NDI prize-money rounds.
Michigan claimed seven bouts, including each of the last six, and earned six bonus wins in its 30-10 victory over Arizona State. ASU won three of the first four bouts, including an upset at 149 pounds, to take a six-point lead early. Graduate student Diego Sotelo earned Michigan's lone lower-weight win with an 8-0 major decision over Damian Moreno at 125 pounds. After Sotelo's opening takedowns, he added a counter go-behind in the final :20 and rode out the match for the bonus point.
Late scoring defined the dual. Outside of a first-period pin at 174 pounds, the Wolverines outscored ASU 42-18 in the third period -- and 37-4 in their victories. Dylan Gilcher scored the decisive takedown with less than :05 left in the third at 165 pounds, while Cameron Catrabone and Brock Mantanona secured their major decisions with late scores at 157 and 184 pounds.
Gilcher, unseeded after bumping up two weight classes, edged No. 14 Nicco Ruiz 4-1. After fighting off a deep single for nearly 30 seconds, Gilcher came out clean, dropped in on his own attack and finished at the edge with :04 left.
Catrabone, ranked 30th, added a ranked win of his own with a 12-4 major decision over No. 26 Chance McLane. Protecting a 6-4 lead in the third, Catrabone won an extended scramble and used a leg turk to turn McLane for a six-point sequence in the final seconds.
Redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona pinned Cael Valencia with a cradle just :50 into the 174-pound match. Younger brother Brock Mantanona followed with a 15-6 major decision, totaling four takedowns -- including a low single off a restart inside :10 -- and 1:12 of riding time. He closed the Wolverine run of six straight wins.
Redshirt freshman Hayden Walters and graduate student Taye Ghadiali capped the dual with bonus points. Walters used a second-period reversal and two late takedowns to defeat Jacob Meissner 9-1, while Ghadiali overwhelmed No. 23 David Szuba 17-2 with five takedowns and more than two minutes of riding time.
Against No. 2 Nebraska, Michigan won four bouts and had opportunities for more, dropping two overtime matches to top-10 opponents at the upperweights. Graduate student Lachlan McNeil and Gilcher delivered major decisions at 149 and 165 pounds, while Brock Mantanona secured the marquee upset with a 10-8 win over No. 6 Silas Allred at 184.
Brock Mantanona opened with a cradle off a reattack for the first takedown, then traded reversals with Allred. After adding another takedown early in the second period, Brock Mantanona held strong late and finished with 1:24 in riding time.
In the prior bout, Beau Mantanona dropped a 4-1 sudden victory decision to No. 4 Christopher Minto after a Michigan challenge on an apparent winning takedown was unsuccessful. The 197-pound match also went to overtime, with Walters falling 4-1 to No. 6 Camden McDanel.
Sotelo earned a 5-2 decision at 125 pounds to open the dual, and McNeil and Gilcher added major decisions to pull Michigan within three after 165. McNeil posted four takedowns in a 15-5 win over Nikade Zinkin, and Gilcher tallied two takedowns, two back points and two minutes of riding time in an 11-1 win over Dez Gartrell.
Michigan immediately returned to the mat to face No. 16 Missouri and endured tough breaks in the opening bouts, giving up a first-period pin at 125 and a last-second reversal on review at 133, which set the tone early.
McNeil highlighted the dual with a top-10 win at 149, rallying to defeat No. 6 Josh Edmond 7-4 with an overtime single at the edge, narrowly missing on a similar attempt late in regulation.
Gilcher completed his perfect day with his second ranked win, an 8-4 decision over No. 11 Maxx Mayfield. Most of Gilcher's scoring came from a headlock finish from his knees in the closing seconds of the second period. The Wolverine sophomore now stands at 4-0 at 165 pounds with two top-15 wins and two bonus victories.
Ghadiali closed the day with a 17-7 major decision over No. 25 Jarrett Stoner, recording four takedowns -- two in the second period -- and accumulating 2:21 of riding time.
The Wolverines (2-2) will wrestle two more duals next weekend -- their final competitions of the first semester. They travel to face Columbia at 6 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 21) at Levien Gymnasium in New York, N.Y., then return home to host Virginia at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 23) at Crisler Center. Tickets for Sunday's dual are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
