ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Jack Ivankovic stopped all 11 shots fired at him to collect his first career shutout in his second start as the University of Michigan ice hockey team posted a 7-0 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday (Oct. 4) at Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan swept the weekend, outscoring the Lakers 18-1. Tonight's shutout is Michigan's first since Logan Stein blanked St. Cloud State 3-0 on Oct. 18, 2024.
The Wolverines dominated in chances, outshooting the Lakers 51-11 while going 4-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Michigan converted on its first power-play opportunity when Will Horcoff tallied the first of his two goals on the night at 6:58 of the opening frame. Freshman Henry Mews directed at the point and dished the puck to Michael Hage inside the left faceoff circle. Hage threw the puck toward the net, and Horcoff redirected it past the netminder.
The Wolverines closed the period with a number of chances on their second power play before the buzzer sent the teams to the first intermission.
Another Lakers infraction put Michigan back on the man advantage, and a Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen bomb from the top of the triangle made it 2-0. Transfers Ben Robertson and Jayden Perron recorded the helpers.
Freshmen Cole McKinney and Adam Valentini teamed up to give Michigan a 3-0 lead at 8:45 of the middle period. Robertson earned his second assist of the night before Valentini sent a pass to McKinney on the doorstep from behind the cage.
The Wolverines tacked on four more goals in the third with back-to-back power-play tallies 1:04 apart. Horcoff scored his sixth of the season while Hage earned his seventh point of the weekend with the primary assist, matching his career best. Hage also had seven in the series at Penn State, Nov. 22-23, 2024. Freshman Malcolm Spence was responsible for the fourth power-play goal.
Junior Garrett Schifsky tallied an unassisted goal at 17:12 before freshman Matthew Mania scored his first as a Wolverine at 19:18.
Michigan gets its first top-10 test next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 10-11), when it travels to No. 9 Providence for a two-game series at Schneider Arena. The games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
