MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team took a four-point lead with 4:13 remaining, but Wisconsin ended the contest on a 12-5 run for an 82-75 Badgers win on Wednesday evening (Jan. 29) at the Kohl Center.
Michigan was led by a career night from Olivia Olson, who finished with 30 points for the first 30-point game of her career. Syla Swords turned in 18 points, five boards and three steals, with Jordan Hobbs going for 13 points. Mila Holloway handed out a career-best eight assists to go with five points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Tied going into the fourth quarter, Michigan took the early lead behind an Olson short corner jumper with 8:50 to go. Michigan did not trail over the next several minutes, taking a four-point lead on three separate occasions, the last coming on a Hobbs triple for a 68-64 lead with 4:13 remaining.
The Badgers went to work from there, scoring six straight points on a run that was capped by a three-point play at the 2:54 mark. Yulia Grabovskaia converted a putback to pull Michigan even at 70 with 2:33 to go, but Wisconsin scored the next seven points to put the game out of reach as the Wolverines never got back within a possession down the stretch.
Michigan was in an early 5-0 hole before ripping off a 10-0 run to double up the Badgers 10-5 in the early going. The teams went back and forth over the rest of the first quarter, with Michigan taking a 17-16 lead after 10 minutes behind eight points from Olson.
Michigan found itself down 24-18 in the opening stages of the second quarter as the Badgers opened on an 8-1 run behind a pair of triples. Grabovskaia found Swords to stop the run, followed by an Olson layup and a Hobbs triple to pull the Maize and Blue even at 25 with 3:36 on the second-quarter clock.
Wisconsin answered with two straight triples, taking a 31-25 lead at the 2:23 mark to force a Michigan timeout. Holloway found Swords for a three-point play, followed by an Olson steal-and-score in the backcourt to pull Michigan within one, 31-30, with 39 ticks left before the half. Wisconsin hit its ninth triple of the opening half on its ensuing offensive possession, taking a 34-30 lead into the break.
The Badgers opened the third quarter with a three-point play and another triple, taking a 40-32 lead in the opening minutes. Back-to-back buckets from Holloway and Olson closed the gap to four, with Holloway connecting on a triple on the next possession to pull the Wolverines within three at 42-39.
Swords scored the next four points, hitting a pair at the line and making a lefty putback for a 43-42 Michigan lead. Much like the first quarter, the teams went back and forth from there, with Hobbs hitting a triple from the right wing on Michigan's final possession of the third quarter, tying the contest at 53 after 30 minutes.
Michigan returns home on Sunday (Feb. 2) to host Oregon in its annual pink game. Tip is set for noon at Crisler Center.
