
Tapper Sets Program Shot Put Record at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Elizabeth Tapper set a new program record in the shot put to lead the University of Michigan women's track and field as it opened its 2025 slate hosting the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 11) at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Tapper, who held the No. 7 shot put mark (15.84m/51 feet, 11.75 inches) on the program performers list coming into the meet, threw for a personal-best 15.88m (52-1.25) on her fourth attempt of the day. After fouling on her fifth attempt, Tapper threw for 16.86m (55-3.75) on the final attempt for the win and the program record.
The Wolverines finished with four of the five top shot put spots, going 1-2-3 with Trinity Franklin (14.77m/48-5.50) and freshman Abigail Russell (14.35m/47-1) rounding out the top three. Clare McNamara posted a personal best, finishing fifth with a mark of 13.61m (44-8).
Russell had an impressive debut for the Maize and Blue, also posting a second-place finish in the weight throw (18.63m/61-1.5) for the No. 7 mark on the program performers list.
Kourtney Rathke won the pole vault with a mark of 3.85m (12-7.50) to tie the No. 10 mark on the program performer's list, while Gabriella Newman won the high jump with a mark of 1.68m (5-6.00). Newman's mark was just 0.03 meters shy of tying her personal best.
Aasia Laurencin ran for a personal best of 7.53 seconds in the 60-meter preliminaries to advance to the finals and came in at No. 10 on the program performers list. Amare Harlan also advanced to the finals, posting a time of 7.55. In the finals, Laurencin finished fourth (7.59) and Harlan finished fifth (7.59).
In the 60-meter hurdles, Mia Manson posted a personal best time of 8.88 in the preliminary round before besting the time (8.85) in the finals and finishing fifth.
Freshmen Bella Harsanyi (1:36.37) and Emma Thomas (1:36.44) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 600-meter run, while Coraline Haggarty finished second in the 800-meter run.
The Maize and Blue will remain home for next Saturday (Jan. 18), when it hosts the Simmons-Harvey Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
