
Wolverines to Host Michigan Open to Kick Off 2024 Campaign

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team will host the Michigan Open on Friday (Aug. 31) at 5 p.m. at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich. to open the 2024 season.
Notes
• Michigan is ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region, the fourth-highest ranked Big Ten team in the region. Michigan State checks in at No. 2, Wisconsin sits at No. 3 and Ohio State comes in just ahead of Michigan at No. 5.
• The Wolverines finished third at the 2023 Big Ten Championships and fourth at the Great Lakes Regional.
• Four of the team's top-five finishers at the 2023 Michigan Open, Kayla Windemuller (first), Lani Bloom (third), Samantha Hastie (fourth) and Rylee Tolson (fifth), return in 2024. The Wolverines lost second-place finisher Samantha Saenz, who finished 18th at the Big Ten Championships and 17th at the Great Lakes Regional.
• Windemuller represented U-M at the 2023 NCAA Championships as an individual, finishing 92nd in the 6k with a time of 20:37.7. Windemuller, who finished eighth at the Great Lakes Regional, will suit up for her final season in maize and blue.
• U-M added 12 freshmen to the 2024 roster as well as a pair of transfers in sophomore Brooke Johnston (UCLA) and graduate student Mary Caroline Heinen (Columbia).
• Bloom, who finished 12th at the Big Ten Championships and 39th at the Great Lakes Regional, will look to build on a strong debut season. In her final race of the season, she ran a 21:19.4 in the 6k to shave 16 seconds off her previous personal best of 21:35.7.
• The Wolverine women will head to Tarre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 21 for their second meet of the season, the John McNichols Inivational hosted by Indiana State.
