SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Following months of preparation, former University of Michigan women's swimmer Amy Appelhans Gubser became the first person to complete a swim from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Farallon Islands, a swim that that spanned 29.7 miles and took 17 hours to finish.
Appelhans Gubser is no stranger to marathon swims having previously completed swims of the Strait of Gibraltar and to Angel Island, but this particular swim was unique in that no one had ever attempted an outbound swim to the Farallon Islands. Only five people had finished a journey in the opposite direction from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Along with a support crew, Appelhans Gubser studied the currents for three months before identifying May 11 as a day for suitable conditions to attempt the swim. She swam for Michigan from 1986-90 and received two varsity letters and Academic All-Big Ten recognition during her time in Ann Arbor.
