ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior RHP Lauren Derkowski, senior RHP Jessica LeBeau and junior shortstop Ella McVey of the University of Michigan softball team were named to the 2023 Academic All-District Softball Teams, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced last Tuesday (May 28). To receive the honor, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of classes and have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average.
Recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom, the CSC Academic All-District honors student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher through at least two semesters.
Derkowski and McVey earn the recognition for the second straight year, while LeBeau is a first-time honoree. Derkowski was also named a finalist for Academic All-America selection. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced Tuesday, June 18.
Derkowski, an industrial & operations engineering major, is a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, earning first team honors this season after leading Michigan with a 19-10 record, 2.29 earned-run average and 222 strikeouts. She was named the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player after pitching all 19 innings en route to the Wolverines' tournament crown. She is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades last season.
LeBeau, who earned her bachelor's degree in psychology last month, went 2-2 from the circle this season with one save, a 2.97 ERA and 38 strikeouts. She posted 31 wins over her four-year career, including 10 in the last two seasons at Michigan, with a 2.94 ERA, nine shutouts and 510 strikeouts. While at Kent State, she earned 2022 Academic All-MAC and MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and honors.
McVey, a biology, health & society major, appeared in all but two games this season in the middle infield, starting 51 at shortstop and six at second base. Named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team, she posted a career-high .313 batting average this season -- a 29-point improvement over her previous best -- with 23 runs, 40 hits and 11 RBI from the No. 9 spot in the order. She is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Michigan has garnered 16 Academic All-America citations in program history, most recently placing Sara Driesenga on the first team in 2016.
