ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan softball head coach Bonnie Tholl announced Tuesday (May 26) the addition of graduate transfer Sydney Schwartz to the Wolverine program. Schwartz, a right-handed pitcher, comes to Ann Arbor after four seasons at Minnesota and will have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2027 season.
"Sydney instantly elevates our pitching staff," said Tholl. "Her combination of success and experience is the exact formula needed, and most importantly, she is a bulldog of a competitor in the circle. We are all thrilled to have Sydney in maize and blue."
A native of Victoria, Minn., Schwartz comes to Ann Arbor after leading the Gophers' pitching staff in each of the last two years. As a senior this past season, she recorded 11 wins, including complete-game victories against Indiana, Ohio State and Northwestern, with a 3.56 earned-run average, five shutouts and 138 strikeouts.
She recorded a 2.84 ERA as a junior in 2026 with 10 wins, three saves, 123 strikeouts and six shutouts -- ranking second in the Big Ten and seventh in the NCAA. She was named to the 2025 Big Ten All-Defensive Team. A business and marketing education and sport management double major at Minnesota, Schwartz is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and earned CSC Academic All-District honors last season.
As a prep athlete at Chanhassen High School, Schwartz was a two-time Gatorade Minnesota Softball Player of the Year (2021, '22) and was named Minnesota's Ms. Softball award winner and the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year following her senior season. Schwartz also appeared on the 2022 Class AAAA Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches Association and MN Softball Hub All-State first teams and was ranked No. 54 nationally in the 2022 Extra Innings Softball rankings.
