STILLWATER, Okla. -- Gavin Young of the University of Michigan men's tennis team fell in three sets at the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday (May 21) in the opening round at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Young, ranked No. 18, won the first set over No. 63 ranked Finn Murgett (Auburn) 6-4 before dropping the next two sets 6-2, 6-4. Young broke Murgett to take a 4-2 edge in the first set and looked to close him out serving 5-3 before Murgett broke back. The Wolverine broke on deuce point to take the set 6-4.
On a four-match win streak, Murgett (20-3) used two breaks to take a 4-1 lead over Young in the second set. After Young earned a break to make it 4-2, Murgett responded with back-to-back games to take a 6-2 set.
In the third, Young was broken twice to find himself down 4-0 before a tremendous rally got him without one, 4-3. At deuce, Young took a medical timeout but Murgett resumed on serve and took the game. The pair traded games with Murgett ultimately taking a 6-4 decision.
Young finishes the season with an 18-14 overall singles record that included a 12-9 dual record. He collected 12 wins over ranked opponents during the season and had an eight-match win streak during the season while earning All-Big Ten honors and his second straight NCAA Singles Championship berth.
Tomorrow, Young and doubles partner Jacob Bickersteth begin NCAA Doubles Championship play.
