STILLWATER, Okla. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis doubles pair of Jacob Bickersteth and Gavin Young dropped their opening-round match at the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday (May 21) at the Greenwood Tennis Center to bring the 2023-24 season to a close.
Tied at a set apiece, the match went to a 10-point tiebreaker as the No. 23-ranked Wolverines squared off against No. 33-ranked Pabo Masjuan and Gianluca Brunkow of UC Santa Barbara.
In the first set the duos went serve for serve before Young and Bickersteth broke to take a 4-3 lead at the changeover. The Gauchos broke back on a controversial game point before the teams continued to split matches to 6-6. Michigan fell behind 4-1 in the tiebreaker before rattling off three straights points to square things at 4-4. With the Wolverines up 6-5, the Gauchos won three straight points to take the tiebreak 8-6.
The second set was all Maize and Blue as Young and Bickersteth jumped out to a 3-0 lead and cruised to a 6-3 decision to set up the deciding set.
The UCSB pair grabbed hold of a 6-3 edge, but the Michigan duo responded with three straight points to even things at 6-6. It was the last point they earned as the Gauchos scored four straight to take the tiebreake 10-6 and the match.
Young and Bickersteth completed their doubles season with a 12-8 record including a 10-7 dual-match record.
