ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (18-3, 6-0 Big Ten) heads to East Lansing on Saturday (April 6) to face rival Michigan State (10-10, 1-5 Big Ten) at 4 p.m.
Notes
• The Wolverines are in action just once this week, heading to Michigan State to face the Spartans. U-M has won 23 straight against MSU after recording a 4-0 shutout win at the Varsity Tennis Center last season. U-M is 58-17 all-time against the Spartans.
• Michigan has won 10 consecutive matches, marking its longest winning streak of the season. Dating back to a 4-1 win over NC State on Feb. 22 to kick off the streak, Michigan has three wins over ranked teams and surrendered just seven points to its opponents.
• Michigan has won 23 straight Big Ten regular-season matches after going 2-0 last weekend with wins over Indiana (March 30) and Purdue (March 31). U-M's last Big Ten loss came to Ohio State on April 1, 2022.
• The Wolverines are tied atop to the Big Ten standings with Wisconsin as the only two undefeated teams in conference action. Michigan is 6-0, with Wisconsin sporting a 5-0 mark.
• In U-M's six conference wins, Michigan has only allowed three points to its opponents and never more than one point in any contest. U-M dropped the doubles point to Maryland and Purdue, with Ohio State taking a singles match off the Wolverines in the Big Ten opener. Michigan is 20-1 in singles action in Big Ten play, led by a 5-0 mark from Gala Mesochoritou.
• Kari Miller is 26-7 overall in singles and 11-4 at No. 1. She is up to 91 career wins, becoming just the 13th Wolverine in program history to reach the mark. With four more wins, she will break into the top 10 in Michigan history without even playing a fall season during her freshman season.
• Mesochoritou played at the top singles spot for the first time in her career in Michigan's shutout win over Indiana (March 30), recording a 6-4, 6-0 victory. She joins Miller and Jaedan Brown as current Wolverines to sport a win at the top of the lineup during their career.
• U-M is 164-8 (.953) in Big Ten regular-season play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to 10 of the last 13 Big Ten championship titles awarded (no title awarded in 2020), as well as five tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• Michigan stayed at No. 2 in this week's ITA team rankings. The Wolverines played seven matches against teams in the top 10 in this week's rankings, picking up four wins during non-conference play.
• For the first time in program history, Michigan has seven players ranked in singles action. Miller stayed at a career-high No. 3 in this week's rankings, with Julia Fleigner (No. 19), Mesochoritou (No. 61), Lily Jones (No. 73), Piper Charney (No. 109), Brown (No. 112) and Bayley Sheinin (No. 118) listed in this week's rankings. It is the first career ranking for Sheinin. Brown and Miller come in at No. 8 as a doubles pair.
• Michigan is one of two schools to have at least seven singles players ranked.
• Singles play has been strong for the Wolverines in dual-match action. U-M is 67-21 in singles play, good for a .761 winning percentage. Charney (14), Mesochoritou (14), Jones (12) and Miller (11) have each reached double-digit wins in dual matches.
• Michigan is 13-0 when winning the doubles point this season and 5-3 without securing the match's first point, getting wins over No. 15 Cal, No. 5 NC State, No. 8 Pepperdine, Maryland and Purdue after falling in doubles play.
• U-M completes the road portion of its regular season next weekend, heading to Wisconsin (April 12) and Minnesota (April 14). Michigan will host Iowa (April 20) and Nebraska (April 21) to conclude the regular season before hosting the 2024 Big Ten Tournament at the Varsity Tennis Center from April 24-28.
