
Michigan Cruises Past MSU to Stay Unbeaten in B1G Play

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team took the doubles point and the first five singles matches to finish, remaining unbeaten in Big Ten action and running its winning streak to 11 with a 6-1 win over Michigan State on Saturday afternoon (April 6) at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Center.
Michigan took the doubles point in about 20 minutes of action, getting a pair of 6-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
At No. 2, it was all Piper Charney and Reese Miller in a 6-0 win as the first match to finish. The freshman duo ran its winning streak to four and kept its conference record perfect at 4-0.
Moments later, Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner put the doubles point on the board with a 6-0 win of their own at No. 3 as U-M grabbed early control in the match.
Michigan took all six first sets in singles action.
Jaedan Brown did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4, pushing Michigan's lead to 2-0. Jones followed in equally impressive fashion, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 5 position to put Michigan on the brink of victory.
It was a race to put the fourth point on the board between Kari Miller and Gala Mesochoritou. Miller came through first behind a 6-1, 6-0 win at the top of the lineup for her seventh straight win. Mesochoritou followed right after, cashing in on her second match point for a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 as the teams decided to play out the match.
Charney kept Michigan State off the board behind a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (3) win at No. 6 for her team-best ninth straight win. After dropping the second set, Charney won seven of the first eight points in the 10-point tiebreaker en route to the win.
MSU won the final singles match on court for a 6-1 Michigan victory.
U-M continues its three-match road swing next weekend, heading to Wisconsin on Friday (April 12) and Minnesota on Sunday (April 14).
