ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the B1G schedule with a 7-0 victory over Wisconsin on Friday (March 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines have now won their last six conference openers.
Michigan took the doubles point with Alex Cairo/Will Cooksey getting two break points in a 6-2 win over Jason Hildebrandt and Collin Beduhn at No. 2. Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth, ranked 27th as a pair, captured a 6-3 win at No. 1. Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral took a win by default at No. 3.
Nicholas Steiglehner gave Michigan its first win in singles as he took down Tomas Zlatohlavek in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 in his first conference match.
Swenson made it 3-0 after taking a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over Matthew Fullerton, his first match and win at No. 2 singles. Oral clinched the match at No. 5 singles with 6-4, 6-3 wins in just his third career dual match. He improves to 3-0 in dual play and extends his singles win streak to three.
Cooksey rebounded back into the win column with a three-set win over Beduhn, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. He is now 3-0 at No. 3 singles in his career.
Bickersteth played and won his first career match at No. 1 singles. He bounced back after falling 6-2 in the first set to Michael Minasyan to post matching 6-2 sets and secure the perfect score for the Wolverines.
Michigan wraps its conference-opening weekend on Sunday (March 24), hosting Nebraska at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
