FULLERTON, Calif. -- The University of Michigan softball team dropped two games at the Judi Garman Classic on Friday (March 1), falling to Oregon State, 1-0, and No. 18 UCLA, 10-0 in six innings at CSU Fullerton's Anderson Family Field.
Michigan struggled to garner offensive momentum for the second straight day. The Wolverines totaled seven hits but could not push a run across, leaving nine runners stranded over the two games.
In the day's first contest, Oregon State scored on a fourth-inning RBI double to leftfield for the only run of the game to claim the series rematch. U-M defeated the Beavers, 2-1, the first weekend of the season at the USF-Rawlings Tournament.
Michigan scattered its hits across three innings. Junior shortstop Ella McVey led off the sixth with a single to center and advanced on a sac bunt but was stranded at second, the only Wolverine to reach scoring position against OSU. McVey earned two hits on the day, as did sophomore second baseman Indiana Langford in her return to the U-M lineup.
Junior RHP Lauren Derkowski (4-4) was solid in defeat, allowing one run on just four hits and no walks while striking out eight Beaver batters.
The Wolverines were doomed by a late-inning surge in the second slate against UCLA, which scored eight over the fifth and sixth innings to end the game early. The Bruins scored half of their runs off a pair of home runs -- a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the sixth.
Michigan was not without scoring opportunities. The Wolverines loaded the bases in the fourth after a pair of base hits and a fielding error, but a strikeout left all three on. Michigan put two more on base in its next turn in the fifth, with singles from McVey and Langford, but could not advance them further.
Freshman RHP Erin Hoehn (4-2) started and took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and a pair of walks. She struck out five Bruins over the first four innings of play.
The Wolverines (10-8) will wrap up their appearance at the Judi Garman Classic with a 9:30 a.m. PST game against Florida tomorrow (Saturday, March 2) at Anderson Family Field.
