Michigan Captures Two Silvers on Day One of Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team got off to a strong start, collecting two silver medals and sitting in third place after the opening night of the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines (112 points) trail No. 6 Indiana (118) and No. 8 Ohio State (116) after Wednesday's relays.
The 200-yard medley relay team was the first to hit the pool, and the quartet of Casey Chung, Natalie Kan, Brady Kendall and Lindsay Flynn, combined to post a 1:35.28 to take the silver medal, finishing behind Ohio State. The team's time was the 10th fastest in the history of the Big Ten Championships.
Following the team diving exhibition event, the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Katie Crom, Hannah Bellard, Stephanie Balduccini, and Christey Liang battled and came from behind to capture the U-M's second silver medal of the evening. Despite starting in fourth through the first two legs, Balduccini put together a solid run, clocking a 1:41.69 split to pull the Wolverines within striking distance of leader Indiana. Liang was able to maintain U-M's position to give the relay team a podium finish.
The Big Ten Championships continue on Thursday (Feb. 22) with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and the one-meter dive. Preliminaries will get underway at 10 a.m, and the diving finals will start at 5 p.m. with the swimming finals commencing at 5:30 p.m.
